KFC Digital Menu Boards and Self-Service Kiosks Case Study Overview:

KFC aimed to modernize their in-store experience by introducing dynamic digital menu boards and self-service kiosks. The goal was to streamline customer interaction, highlight key products and promotions, and enhance overall engagement. As the Creative Director, I lead the design, motion graphics, and execution for both the menu boards and self-service kiosks. This project involved close collaboration with Ogilvy South Africa, who handled DTP services and provided product shots that played a vital role in the final visual execution.

Objectives and Approach:

The key objective was to elevate the customer journey by creating a visually compelling and user-friendly digital experience. Both the digital menu boards and self-service kiosks needed to enhance brand consistency while driving sales and improving efficiency.

The design for the menu boards maintained a clean, minimalist look that balanced KFC’s iconic red and white palette with bold, easy-to-read typography. We worked with Ogilvy to ensure the product shots were of the highest quality, making KFC’s offerings look as appetizing as possible. For the self-service kiosks, the design approach emphasized intuitive navigation and clear product categorization, ensuring a seamless ordering process for customers.

Motion graphics were designed to be informative without being distracting. Subtle transitions and animations guided customers toward key promotions and meal deals, creating a smooth and dynamic interaction that encouraged engagement.

Execution:

We developed a modular design system adaptable to different regions and screen sizes, enabling rapid updates and localization for both the digital menu boards and kiosks. The self-service kiosks were designed with a clear user journey in mind, incorporating touchpoints for product exploration, customizations, and promotions. The visual hierarchy ensured that core items and limited-time offers stood out, making it easy for customers to make decisions quickly.

Collaborating with Ogilvy for DTP and product shots allowed us to seamlessly integrate high-quality imagery into both platforms, ensuring consistency in the visual presentation. The motion graphics were tailored to enhance the customer’s interaction with the digital displays without slowing down the decision-making process. The technical execution involved close coordination with KFC’s stakeholder's to ensure smooth deployment and management across multiple locations.

Results:

The introduction of digital menu boards and self-service kiosks resulted in a significant increase in customer engagement and a boost in sales, particularly for promotional items. The self-service kiosks improved operational efficiency by reducing wait times and enabling a faster, more intuitive ordering process. The modular and dynamic design also allowed KFC to quickly update promotions and products across all stores, ensuring a consistent brand experience.

Conclusion:

This project successfully modernized KFC’s in-store experience by integrating dynamic digital menu boards and self-service kiosks. By combining thoughtful design, high-quality product visuals from Ogilvy, and engaging motion graphics, we created a cohesive digital solution that not only increased sales but also enhanced the customer experience. The project reinforced KFC’s position as a forward-thinking brand, leading with innovation and customer-focused design.
