Rebranding iKhokha – A Transformative Journey in Payment Solutions


iKhokha, a South African fintech startup, had established itself as a promisingplayer in the payment solutions market. However, by 2019, the company facedincreasing competition and struggled with brand awareness and market positioning. Recognizing the need for a significant brand overhaul, iKhokha embarked on a comprehensive rebranding initiative, led by myself. As a Creative Lead, I oversaw the strategic and creative transformation of the company’s identity, propelling it to achieve an impressive 400% year-on-year growth.

 

The Challenge

When I pitched a full-scale rebranding strategy, the companywas facing several challenges:

  • Fragmented Brand Identity: The brand lacked a unified visual and tonal language, creating confusion in the market.
  • Low Brand Recognition: Despite offering robust products, iKhokha struggled to establish a strong market presence against larger competitors like Yoco and PayFast.
  • Outdated Positioning: iKhokha’s value proposition was unclear, and its messaging didn’t resonate with the fast-evolving needs of SMEs and other merchants.
  • Growing Competition: The fintech space was growing rapidly, with an influx of competitors offering innovative solutions for small businesses.

 

The rebranding aimed to reposition iKhokha as acutting-edge, reliable, and innovative solution for merchants of all sizes while enhancing market penetration and driving growth.

Strategy

To address these challenges, I crafted a multi-phase rebranding strategy focused on several key pillars:

  1. Brand Discovery and Insights:
       
    • Conducted extensive market research and competitor analysis to understand the needs of iKhokha’s target audience, the pain points of SMEs, and the evolving landscape of payment technologies.
    •  
    • Engaged with internal stakeholders and customers to gather insights on brand perception and areas of opportunity for growth.

  3. Brand Identity Redesign:
       
    • Developed a bold, modern, and dynamic visual identity that reflected iKhokha’s innovative spirit. The new logo, color palette, and typography were designed to communicate trust, efficiency, and simplicity.

    • The visual language was built to be adaptive, maintaining consistency across digital and physical touchpoints, from mobile apps to retail presence.
    •  
    • Introduced new brand assets, including updated brand guidelines, marketing templates, and product packaging.

  5. Messaging and Tone of Voice:
       
    • Refined the brand’s messaging to speak directly to the needs of small business owners and entrepreneurs. The new tagline, "We make business easier," encapsulated iKhokha’s commitment to providing merchants with accessible and reliable payment solutions.

    • Adopted a conversational, friendly tone of voice to humanize the brand and create a more approachable image, distinguishing iKhokha from more corporate competitors.

  7. Creative Direction and Content Strategy:
       
    • Led the creative direction for a comprehensive content overhaul across digital platforms, including the website, social media, and emailcampaigns. The new content emphasized customer success stories, product education, and real-world applications of iKhokha’s payment solutions.

    • Developed a series of dynamic video ads, product demonstrations, and behind-the-scenes content to showcase the brand’s technology and humanize its offering.

    • Coordinated with product teams to align product launches with the rebrand, highlighting new features and functionalities of iKhokha’s payment solutions.

    • Implemented an omnichannel marketing strategy with targeted campaigns across digital advertising, social media, and influencer partnerships to reach small business owners and entrepreneurs.

    • Worked closely with internal teams to ensure brand values and messaging were embraced across the organization. A company-wide rollout was launched, including internal training and workshops to bring everyone in line with the new vision.

Execution

The rebrand was rolled out in phases, beginning with a soft launch to internal stakeholders and a core group of customers. This was followed by a full-scale public launch, including a refreshed website, product reintroduction, and digital marketing campaigns.

 

Key aspects of the execution included:

  • Website Redesign: iKhokha’s website was reimagined with a user-centric approach. Simplified navigation, clear calls to action, and an enhanced user interface made it easier for merchants to explore products and onboard with iKhokha’s services.
  • Social Media Activation: A series of creative campaigns, such as "Real Stories from Real Merchants," featured customer testimonials and highlighted how iKhokha was helping small businesses thrive.
  • Partnerships: Collaborated with influential entrepreneurs, business influencers, and tech media outlets to increase iKhokha’s visibility in key markets.
  • Retail Activation: Revamped in-store experiences and point-of-sale (POS) materials to reflect the new brand identity, ensuring consistent customer interactions.

Results

The rebranding initiative exceeded expectations, driving significant growth and elevating iKhokha’s market presence. Key outcomes included:

  1. 400% Year-on-Year Growth: The rebranding and marketing efforts led to an astounding 400% growth in revenue and user base year-over-year, positioning iKhokha as one of the fastest-growing fintech startups in South Africa.
  2. Enhanced Brand Recognition: The new identity significantly boosted brand awareness, making iKhokha a recognizable name
